"Ambition is the last refuge of the failure"
Oscar Wilde
2006 is almost over. pejam celik, pejam celik, time certainly did go by so fast. and for the first time in many many years, am without job, ambition nor resolution. giler ke hape?
when i was busy slaving myself away infront of those damned editing machines once upon a time, one thought kept playing in my head, "bila la bila aku nak berenti kerja ni?" i kept bitching about my ungodly working hours, time spent away from my family, friends... good food. my right brain was, on several occasions, screaming murder. THAT was not the life i should be living. or so i thought.
now that am jobless and with absolutely nothing but time on my hands, i begin to wonder if i should have wished for something other than the gift of listlessness. hmmm...
*and if mr. wilde was right, then i must be the biggest success story of the new year. nice.

Hiya...
Since we're talking about new year and stuff, I post here my piece in the Freespace column in theSun, yesterday.
Hope 2006 was a blast for you, and may 2007 bring you 'bundles' of joy... hint, hint. Selamat Hari Raya Eidul Adha Arnie.
THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE FIRST APPEARED IN THE SUN, AS "PROMISES TO KEEP", ON DECEMBER 28, 2006: (Haiya this part I have to put la - part of my contributor's contract!)
My New Year Resolutions for 2007
It’s that time of the year again when that old-as-time activity of New Year resolutions are set. I think those lists are important as a tool to give focus and clarity in our direction in the New Year. But in recent years I have taken the decision to limit my list – I once had a list about 50 items long – to just three goals ; personal, professional and societal..
So here is my list for 2007.
Over the past three years, the personal goal has always been about the predominant colour of my wardrobe. Before you guys start accusing me of being vain (you don’t have to because I will readily admit to it!), here’s perspective.
I have always been a firm believer in how what I wear affects my mood and personality. Two years ago I found that I needed to be a bit more in-your-face about myself, so red became the colour of choice. Last year, I wanted to be closer to nature so I chose green.
2007 beckons, and I have decided to be a calmer person, thus the chosen colour is… blue! This may be some sort of a problem as I already have plenty of blue in my wardrobe as it also happens to be my favourite hue.
Why calmer? Well, its not that I am this hurried person who must press the close button when riding on the elevator (admit it, YOU are one of them right?). It’s just that over 2006, I found that I could queue at the SmartTag lane when the idiot up front messes up the smooth flow, as opposed to switching to the other SmartTag lane or the TouchnGo lane. I want to build on this alternative yoga of the mind.
Not a big deal you say? Your opinion is accepted, but I just feel that Malaysians especially, need to slow down a bit in some areas of their already frenetic rat race. I know some of you agree to this call to slow down. Email me.
My professional goal for 2007 is to undertake a project in my new place of work (wherever that may be; call me for my resume please) and achieve every one of the KPIs set by the management. I can hear you yuppies out there saying “I do that every day! I achieve all my KPIs every day!” Great! Bring out the champagne! This is my list dude, not Aunt Yolanda and definitely not yours. So ** *****!
My societal goal for 2007 is to be more of a humanitarian. I was blessed to be in the company of Malaysia’s foremost humanitarians last month at the national level awards. I was so humbled by the experience.
Among those I rubbed shoulders with: a thirty-something man that runs a soup kitchen for the needy; a polio victim that ran programs to raise funds for the under-privileged (he is now deceased after meeting with an accident on his fund-raising rounds); and a lady close to 100 years of age that runs an orphanage on her own land with her husband’s pension.
It made 37 year old me feel rather small, but it also inspired me. I want to give more to my fellow Malaysians, and thus I will devote some of my time as a volunteer, including doing pro-bono compere work for charity organisations (email me please). By the way, my next column will delve into the humanitarians I spoke of above.
About 4 years ago I stumbled a cross an adage that has been my motto since; “If what you did yesterday seem big, you have done nothing today”. Happy New Year Malaysia. Good luck.
