i wrote this when i was in m'sia but for some technical reason, wasn't able to get it posted on my blog. i don't wanna press delete.
i've decided that i really do love my home. and its people.
well, some of them at least.
i had my mammogram done last friday. the wait was torture but the experience was anything but. i sat around a group of very interesting middle-aged ladies who were insistent that am chinese. i told them "no, no, saye melayu..." but no one seemed to buy my story. i usually get annoyed and/or offended when strangers give me the "eh muka cina, kenapa nama melayu" third degree but this time, i felt amused by their endless inquisitions. maybe it was the radioactive kicking in or maybe it was just the fact that i was already eavesdropping on their conversations way before they started shifting their focus on me.
"hiya, why don't you go to that famous senseh on jalan silang? yes lah, those shophouses maaah... can buang all your angin one..."
"she's 64 ke?! she looks sooo young!! do you know she's 64?? kulit sume tegang macam umur 50 tahun ni!! malu la i like this. you... you how old?"
"you think i'm fat now? auntie, you should tengok me a few months ago. i'm double my size. you tau i buat ape selama ni? i tak makan nasi you know..."
"eh why you're here one? you sooo young. you're lucky you know. we're old like this only know about this mammogram business. eh but yes la yes, it's never too late for aything. smart la you."
"your mom and sisters had breast cancer? don't worry, don't worry. everything will be alright. i'm 64. i know."
to most, these women may sound like people who love to jaga tepi kain orang but if you ask me, i believe those "kakak-kakak" i met were genuinely concerned and interested in the myriad of stories surrounding them... and i for one, found their spirit of camaraderie, weirdly comforting.
i've been back for slightly more than 3 weeks now and so far, the hot topic of discussion that keeps popping up in my daily conversations with friends and families (apart from "kenapa linda onn tidak muncul di karpet merah oscars") is how corrupt (malay)sians politicians are. pak lah, kj, state government officials... semua sama. semua makan duit rakyat. values are lost, personal integrity squandered. i shudder to think about what's gonna happen to this country in 15-20 years. the way our so-called leaders are running malaysia today, i don't even know if my unborn children will have a tanahair they can proudly call home tomorrow... *sigh*
it was my good fortune to have met the ladies at the national cancer society in kampung baru. they may not be some hoity toity puan sri's or datin sri's with coiffured hair and million dollar homes to boot but they were to me, the genuine articles. the real hands that rock our future cradles. they may (to some) lack all the worldly sophistication but they come fully loaded with conviction and very good intentions. jenis yang tak mintak disogok duit -- buat kerja, beri nasihat dengan hati yang ikhlas.
and if those man-eating $harks don't get to them (and their kind) fast enough, i can honestly say, masih ada harapan untuk malaysia... to at least continue to grow as a country we all can be proud of to call home.
well, some of them at least.

Mamogram? Didn't know you do/did that? So proactive of you la.
You know after browsing all the blogs of the journalists/commentaries...I think you guys are the way you guys are because there is such an idealism in you all. You aspire for all the good things, and you make the rest of us common folks get our heads out of our ass so that we can think and that we should aspire to have the best too...therefore fight for what we deserve.
I don't know if you want to call me a fatalist or a cynic, but I've come a stage where I think the stuff that are happening in politics, etc. will always be the same in any country. It's human nature, and if you think about this "human" side of us has always happened throughout time even during Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). It is God's test for mankind, and Syaitan will do his damnest to stray us off the true path.
Things will not change, but it is up to the individual to make their own change and impact...so keep your idealist way and keep writing so that we are reminded that we deserve better.
Miss you babe!
babe...
u did mammogram ke ultrasound?
sapa buat? itu dr sulaiman tamanang ke? kekekeke malu tak? ehh..ko ni pemalu ke? trying to imagine u being a shy woman.. he he he
What I remember from my mamogram experience was when the nurse sized me up and say...hmmm.."small". I guess that's how she estimate how much pressure she need to put on my boobs to get the mamograph done. Even then it was painful. And that was almost 10 years ago. I haven't done one since..:)
I agree with my so-called-life. We can only control the outcome of our actions, not others. Just keep our eyes, ears and mind open.
nina,
am so touched that you consider me a "journalist"... wow. i was never any good at that, reporting. the only thing i know how to do was to tell a story.
but youre right -- you can't change people around, it is you who can make the difference. but now, more so than ever, i believe small changes, if pooled together, can bring a flood of positive reactions.
btw, for some odd reason, am going 'greener' these days. maybe its because i was so turned on by leonardo dicaprio's work in the departed (he's an environmentalist) or maybe because am starting to REALLY see the adverse effects of human greediness over oil, land and all things material (sebelum ni aku buat dek aje). all actions are interconnected and in the end, mother earth suffers. bak kata my friend wan emily, "i will jaga my face baik-baik coz this is the only face i've got" so the same applies to our planet, it's the only one we've got... we've no excuse not to take care of it.
ok, aku dah merapu.
pengajaran cerita, i miss you too and bush sucks. plus, iran should have just killed that 15 british soldiers. now, they perasan they're the real heroes of war. boleh blah. ntah2 berapa round dah kencing dalam seluar.
pejoh,
aku buat dua2 -- mamogram and ultrasound. actually dorang tak kasi buat mamo (not encouraged) for women below 40 but aku mengelat. aku mintak tolong farid's sister write up a letter saying bermuda requires mamo for immigration purposes hehehehe:)
nama doctor, ntah tak tau. yang aku tau dia dok dalam bilik gelap satu hari tengok x-ray tetek pompuan. doesn't look too turned on by it tho muhahahaha!!!
ape nak malu beb, the radiologist was a lady :)
amy,
yeah, lagi kecik lagi sakit coz they have to really pull your tits out to penyetkan atas that lil' counter. ouch!! aku pun dah perit, am sure yours was doubly torturous!!
btw, you happy in dc?
OMG...if that's how it feels to have a mamo...may never get it now!
Dah lah kecik and now saggy and leper with all the babies I had...mampu aku. At least Amai ko punya masih perky, or doesn't that help?
Die la..
it is really that badd ehh??
no wonder la all these makcik2 yg dah biase buat kata depa mesti mengalir air mata punya lahh
eh...I have another one for you on the points of "silent" consonants! It's not limited to the "G" aje...wat about the "Ps"? Psycho - ni lagi la silent P&H! Pseudo, apa lagi?
Is this enough work for you to think about? May be you can become a journalist and linguist...hahahaha!! Dua-dua "-ist". Aku dah merapu. Better get back to work.
nina + pejoh,
to be honest, i expected it to be far worse. pedih memang la pedih but if you get a radiologist who can go snap, snap, snap and... snap in a jiffy, then ok. one 'penyetan' is about 4 seconds so that'll only be 16 seconds of torture. lepas tu rasa denyut2... and then no hal. kawtimmm :)
that place i went to in kpg baru had the latest technology, baru dapat within the last 6 months. highly recommended by doctors and cheaper than any private hospitals. ceh, aku plug in free pulak :)
p/s and miss-malas-nak-buat-keje, weh, daaaah... jangan nak pening kan otak aku dengan all this silent alphebets. i've always been bangang with languages and i ain't gonna change my ways now!!
whatt?
u have always been bangang with language??
aku tau ko mmg bangang arab dulu..sesama bangang dgn aku..
anyway, next time u feel like lfashing ur tits to the radiologist again..consider going to glenagles lah...radiologist dia ade this mamat, irish grad..muka mixed2 gitu nama something2 merican... hehehehe
Lembu.
I agree. You're not a good journalist. Samalah jugak aku. Remember you and I went to cover Sultan Selangor punye muzium kat Klang. Our stoopid standuppers -- the one yang kau tiba2 muncul from one of the Sultan's huge portraits? Which we ended up falling heads over heels with the muzium's PR guy? Yang kau minat gila babas, siap call ajak pi karaoke tu? Don't feign innocent now! You remember damn well i know!
So in short, we suck being a journalists coz we don't chase story leads, we chase the damn PR guys. Bloody hell.
Geez..maybe the new technology does help. I had bad experience, sakit gila that I almost pening2 lalat after that. Having bigger tits may help..haha. I did that when I was still in my early 20s..my tits were still perky as hell. I don't know about you Nina, you may want to swallow a couple of Vicadins..hehe. Oh well..all those checkups for women well- beings are uncomfortable. Imagine doing pap smear every 6 months! even now after many sessions still sakit *cringe*
-amai-
pejoh,
citt, horny la kau tu. aku dah agak dah... muhahahahah!!!
lembu,
aku ingat!!! nama dia munasor and kita berebut2 nak kat dia pasal masa tu kita buta and dia pakai keta alfa romeo macam nazam tu hah!!! kahkahkahkahkah!! tu la aku kawan ngan kau terus jadi tak sedar diri... hampeh!
and now look at us. aiyo. we are doomed to hell!!
amy,
nina and i share the same feelings about sex. ask her (senyap2 la woiii!) hahaha!!!!
babe,
"nina and i share the same feelings about sex. ask her (senyap2 la woiii!) hahaha!!!! " - aku nak tau gakkkk
amy...
